| Waiting for Wal-Mart. Every day, many thousands of motorists heading west on Colorado Highway 119 toward Longmont, Colorado, drive past this former agricultural site. Few of them notice the urban transformation that is surrounding the uncomplicated view of the rural landscape. Directly across the major highway an expansive municipal park, Sandstone Ranch, is reshaping public use of the land in positive ways. West of the park a new Wal-Mart and Sam's Club project has been approved for development. New and used car dealerships now line the southern edge of the highway. Residential and commercial development is appearing to the east and north of the site. Longmont's urban core is moving eastward. Where eagles formerly nested, and where spectacular sunsets once brought the silence of night, the sights and sounds of urbanization now engulf the landscape. Memorable eras end, and new eras begin. Thoughtfully remembering fading eras is part of the fabric of welcoming new eras and new memories. Waiting for Wal-Mart is simply part of the process of change. Robert A. Dacey |
